We are excited to introduce the 2023 Honorees that PLC will be recognizing at our upcoming Volunteers For Justice Event!
Please join us on Thursday, June 15 from 5:30-8:30 pm at The Promenade and Gardens by Turnip Rose in Costa Mesa, to celebrate these exceptional partners and their dedication to pro bono work.
Law Firm Of The Year
This year, we are delighted to honor Snell & Wilmer for their significant pro bono contributions in 2022. A long-standing partner of PLC, Snell & Wilmer supported PLC last year with immigration, veterans, consumer, and nonprofit pro bono cases, as well as volunteering time at our Bankruptcy clinic.
In particular, their pro bono volunteers worked on a difficult elder justice case in which an elderly, Spanish-speaking client had been deceived into signing over the title to her home to a family member, after he had moved himself and his family into her home under the guise of helping her. With the help of Snell & Wilmer’s legal team, she successfully filed suit to reverse the transfer of title days before the statute of limitations was set to expire. After drafting and filing documents, negotiating with opposing counsel, appearing in court, and maintaining constant contact with the client, the Snell & Wilmer team succeeded in ejecting all the adverse parties from the home, transferring the title back into the client’s name, and receiving a settlement which allowed her time to find new, reliable tenants and remain in her home. The client is incredibly grateful for Snell & Wilmer’s assistance in helping her fight her way out of what had become an impossible and traumatizing situation.
We are also honored to spotlight the amazing work of our community partner, the Council on Aging – Southern California (COASC). Every month – sometimes multiple times a month – COASC partners with PLC to bring know-your-rights information and legal services to senior centers throughout Orange County. Recent presentations have included: how to spot and prevent financial scams, the benefits of having an estate plan, how to prevent elder abuse, knowledge on laws that protect older and dependent adults, and how to report abuse. These presentations consistently have high turnout rates, result in many insightful questions from the audience, and lead to referrals for legal services. COASC provides an invaluable service to the older adult community and we are grateful to work alongside them in the fight against elder abuse in our communities.
